YEAR 9 STEAM PROJECT 2016An experimental STEAM project took place last week where all of year 9 worked on a cross-curricular task connected to the new school campus. (STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths). Students in the D&T part of the project used sketchup to 3d model the new campus site and investigate how shadows fell across the pool area as well as creating scale models of the site to show designs for canopy roofing over the pool area.
Y9 RAPID PROTOTYPING

Year 9 students have investigated the design legacy of the Bauhaus design school in Germany during the 1920s and have designed and modelled their own chairs in the style of the Bauhaus. As always, Action Man has been more than willing to act as an ergonome for testing the designs.

Students attempted the Spaghetti Tower challenge, built and tested solar ovens, designed and built boats and finished with the art straw bridge.

TERM 3: RAPID PROTOTYPING
Y9 have once again been using the 3d printers to create rapid prototypes of a range of designs. The two machines have been working round the clock to keep up with the steady flow of product ideas being generated. Accessories has been the first area for innovation, moving on to 3d printed spectacles and small toys.

The BAUHAUS CHAIR project 2015
In the second carousel unit, year 9 students have been looking at the influence of the Bauhaus Design school of the 1920s, and creating a chair design for the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin.
2014-2015
The new Year 9 groups are working on laser cut boxes again and there have been some very interesting projects from the first carousel group
3d printing Y9 2013-14
Year 9 have been designing and rapid prototyping with the 3d printer. They have produced a range of accessories as part of their design business activities. Mr Brandon's group have been designing and prototyping SuperHero toy accessories while Mr Simon's group have produced a range of 3D spectacles and sunglasses.
Laser Cut Boxes Project, 2013-14
Year 9's second unit involves designing a wooden box for a specific purpose, then manufacturing the product using laser cut pieces and comb jointing as well as engraved designs and hinges/catches/sliding lids or "biscuit tin" lids as appropriate.

Carousel group 1 completed some impressive looking point of sale displays for electronic products. Using a variety of plastics techniques, the outcomes very very professional and served as a good starting point for carousel group 2.
